Figureheads
New sculpture by
JACOB FORAN

April 16 - May 21, 2011

Cinema Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of new sculpture by Jacob Foran. The show makes obvious reference to the sculpted human head and ship-bow sentinels—maritime statuary otherwise known as figureheads. Placed on the bow with eyes gazing over vast waters, their function was to safeguard mariners. At the core, Foran's work links water and travel to explorations of the self and the psychological challenges fundamental to human experience. In isolation these ornately whirled, shimmer-lined artifacts are figurative of the matter that fueled their expressions.

Foran is a recent graduate of the Master's in Fine Arts program at the University of Washington and currently resides in Seattle. He has a BFA in sculpture and a BFA in ceramics from the University of Illinois. His work has been exhibited widely throughout the US, included in more than forty exhibitions in the past five years. Most recently he curated “A Show of Heads” at Cinema Gallery in Urbana, IL, in October 2010. In summer 2011 he will be a resident artist at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.
